Know Your Diamond

Diamond Cut:

  1. If a diamond is cut appropriately then it may appear larger than its actual size. The sparkle of a well cut diamond makes it look bigger and appealing to the eyes.
  2. Cut is responsible for the overall beauty of the diamond. It is very important to procure highest cut diamond within your budget.
  3. Every diamond is unique on its own, every diamond has varying degree of brilliance, intensity and fire. If the diamond is cut appropriately then it will always be appealing to the eye.
  4. Poorly cut diamonds have dark areas, and if light leaks out from the bottom it appears to be even darker.
  5. Shape and cut are often used synonymously but these terms are widely different. Shape refers to the overall form while cut refers to the grade which controls the amount of light emitted by the diamond and hence forth its sparkle.
  6. Diamonds with the professional cut have higher grades and they cost more. They are rare to find because it requires great skill and artisanship to create such diamonds. Moreover it also requires higher amount of time to produce a well cut diamond.

Diamond Color:

  1. It's the sparkle  of the diamond that enchants human eye more than the color, so color becomes the next important characteristic of a graded diamond.
  2. As the size of the diamond increases, colour becomes prominent. Color becomes important when the size of the diamond is more than two carats.
  3. The colour difference between diamonds of closely linked graded diamonds like I to J or G to H is so minor that it cannot be differentiated with human eye. But the cost difference between these diamonds can be large enough.
  4. Shapes like round or Princess cut reflect more light and hence colour is not prominently visible.
  5. The material in which the diamond is studded can complement its colour. White gold or platinum goes better with grades D to H, while I to J looks better with yellow gold.

Diamond Clarity:

  1. Clarity of diamond is very important factor while selecting a diamond. But mostly the imperfections are so small that they cannot be visualised with the human eye.
  2. If you have a tight budget you may buy a diamond with impurities but you can smartly hide the imperfections beneath the ring prong so it would not be visible on the fore front.
  3. The size of the diamond facet increases in proportion to the size of the diamond.
  4. Emerald shape diamonds have higher transparency over sparkle. For such diamonds the clarity grade becomes important. It is always recommended to buy diamonds with VS1 clarity so that the imperfections are not visible.

Diamond Carat:

  1. Diamond carat alone cannot give you an accurate idea of the size of the diamond. It should be considered in association with the millimetres across the top.
  2. Diamond prices jump at full carat and half carat. So for a smart buy you should purchase a .97 cart diamond instead of one carat. The difference may not be prominent in the size but you will save considerable with your smart buy.
